Heal Komfo Anokye Project Enters Second Phase as Renovation Efforts Intensify
The second phase of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project is making remarkable progress, following the successful renovation and handover of the A4 and A5 wards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
Led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II the $10 million initiative aims to modernize and fully restore Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital, which has suffered decades of wear and deterioration. The project is being implemented with a vision to transform KATH into a state-of-the-art medical facility befitting its national reputation.
The newly refurbished A4 and A5 wards are now operational and serving inpatients. According to Mr. Kwame Frimpong, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, attention is now shifting to raising funds and mobilizing resources for the renovation of the remaining wards.
All four old D blocks have not received any comprehensive renovation since their construction in 1955, Mr. Frimpong explained during an interview on Joy FM’s midday news on Friday, April 18. The expectation is that after completing A4, A5, and A3, we will move to A2 and A1 to complete the A block. Then, renovation will continue with the B, C, and D blocks.
A significant aspect of the project is sustainability. Mr. Frimpong revealed that 10% of the total project budget has been earmarked for a maintenance fund, ensuring the new infrastructure will be preserved long-term.
“We have a robust plan to ensure that the facilities we’ve refurbished, thanks to Otumfuo’s initiative, will not deteriorate like the original 70-year-old structures,” he said.
The scope of work goes beyond aesthetics. The renovations include:
• Tripling the number of washrooms and water closets to meet the needs of modern patient volumes.
• Installing new mosquito-proof window systems, as the existing windows are incompatible with netting.
• Laying new oxygen pipelines to ensure each bed has access to an oxygen supply—an upgrade not present in the original design.
“This is not just renovation; it’s a comprehensive and total modernization, Mr. Frimpong emphasized. We are upgrading the facilities to match the current health needs and safety standards.
To support the continuation of the project, a fundraising and awards dinner was scheduled but has now been postponed.
The event has regrettably been postponed due to circumstances beyond the control of the organizers, Mr. Frimpong announced. “We apologize to all those who had made plans to attend. The event is being organized in conjunction with the Manhyia Palace, and a new date will be announced soon.
The Heal Komfo Anokye Project stands as a testament to the Asantehene’s commitment to quality healthcare delivery in Ghana. With ongoing support from the public, corporate bodies, and stakeholders, the project is expected to transform KATH into a truly modern healthcare institution capable of serving future generations.
