Accra Lions Shock Asante Kotoko with 3-0 Win to Dent Porcupines’ Title Hopes

Asante Kotoko’s hopes of regaining the top spot in the Ghana Premier League were dealt a heavy blow after a stunning 3-0 defeat to Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

Heading into the match with ambitions of returning to winning ways after a 1-1 draw with Bechem United, the Porcupine Warriors were expected to stamp their authority. However, a determined Accra Lions side — fighting to escape the relegation zone — had other plans.

Gildas Jacob opened the scoring for the hosts in the 19th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound off the post and slotting home to give Lions a deserved lead. The goal gave the underdogs confidence and rattled Kotoko’s defensive structure.

Accra Lions doubled their advantage just before halftime after launching a swift and ruthless four-on-two counterattack. Yao Sopkoli was on hand to apply the finishing touch, leaving the Kotoko defence in disarray.

The final blow came in the second half when David Akintunde broke into the 18-yard box and powered a shot past the goalkeeper to seal the emphatic victory for Lions. Kotoko’s only real chance to reduce the deficit came through Kwame Opoku, but a brilliant save from goalkeeper Daniel Afful denied him.

The defeat marks Kotoko’s heaviest loss of the season and sees them drop to third place with 47 points. They now look ahead to a tough clash against second-placed Nations FC, in what could be a decisive game in the title race.

For Accra Lions, the victory is a massive boost in their relegation battle. They move up to 14th on the league table with 29 points and will now shift focus to their next crucial encounter against Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium.

The result not only shakes up the title race but also adds fuel to the fight for survival at the bottom of the table — proving once again that in the Ghana Premier League, no fixture is a foregone conclusion.
