Peter Okoye Speaks Out on Two Decades of Family Betrayal Amid Court Case Against Brother Jude Okoye
Nigerian music sensation Peter Okoye, one-half of the iconic music duo P-Square, has spoken out about enduring over two decades of betrayal and emotional manipulation within his family. The revelation comes in the wake of an ongoing legal battle involving his elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye.
In a candid Instagram story posted on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Peter disclosed how he silently suffered for more than 20 years, prioritising family over his mental well-being until it nearly cost him everything.
Don’t let ‘family’ be the reason you’re drowning in silence. I did – for over 20 years and it almost cost me everything. But now I know better – love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family doesn’t steal from you he wrote.
Peter further expressed that true family should offer support and love, not betrayal and emotional distress.
“Family that steals and breaks you isn’t family at all. Real family doesn’t drain you, shame you, discriminate against you, or ignore your pain. My sanity matters. My mental health is a priority. If it costs my mental health, then it’s too expensive,” he added.
Peter’s heartfelt message comes just a day after he testified in court against his elder brother, Jude Okoye, in a high-profile fraud and money laundering case.
Jude Okoye, who once served as P-Square’s manager, is currently being prosecuted by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a seven-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and misappropriation of funds. The charges involve the diversion of royalties amounting to N1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59, allegedly belonging to the P-Square group.
Testifying before the court on Monday, April 14, Peter claimed that Jude registered a new company in his wife’s name with a name similar to one owned by P-Square. He alleged that Jude used this new entity to divert royalties and funds meant for the duo without their knowledge or consent.
Jude Okoye, however, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and maintains his innocence.
Peter’s emotional post has drawn a wave of reactions across social media. Many fans have praised him for his bravery in speaking out and prioritising his mental health despite the backlash often associated with airing family issues publicly.
This ongoing case continues to unravel more about the inner workings and eventual fallout of one of Africa’s most successful music groups, leaving fans both shocked and sympathetic.
As the legal proceedings continue, many await further developments in what has become one of the most high-profile family and business disputes in Nigerian music history.
