MC Portfolio Explains King Paluta’s Omission from TGMA Most Popular Song Category
Renowned Ghanaian entertainment personality and event host MC Portfolio has provided clarity on why King Paluta was left out of the Most Popular Song category at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
Despite the massive success of King Paluta’s hit song Makoma the artist’s omission from the category raised questions among fans. According to MC Portfolio the decision was influenced by a new regulation in the nomination process.
Explaining the rationale behind the exclusion MC Portfolio revealed that the Charterhouse board—organizers of the awards—has introduced a new rule preventing two hit songs from the same artist from being nominated in the same category.
The Charterhouse board has determined that starting this year no two hit songs from a single artist that qualify for the same category will be nominated together, he stated.
We only learned of this decision yesterday as we were seeking clarity on the guidelines during the application process having previously witnessed instances where two hit songs from one artist were nominated in the same category.
This means that if an artist has multiple hit songs only one can be considered for a category leading to Makoma’s omission.
Why Makoma Was Not Considered for Hiplife Song of the Year
Apart from being excluded from Most Popular Song of the Year Makoma was also rejected for the Hiplife Song of the Year category. MC Portfolio explained that after consulting with Reggie Rockstone and other Hiplife pioneers it was determined that Makoma did not meet the genre’s criteria.
Initially, we aimed to submit ‘Makoma’ for the Hiplife Song of the Year as King Paluta indicated that he drew inspiration from hiplife music for the track. However, according to the established criteria, the song does not qualify as a Hiplife song, which prevented its nomination.
Many Ghanaian music lovers have expressed disappointment over the exclusion of Makoma especially considering its impact over the past year. Some argue that the song’s commercial success and popularity should have secured it a spot in the Most Popular Song category.
However MC Portfolio’s explanation sheds light on the TGMA’s evolving nomination process emphasizing the new rules that artists and fans must adapt to moving forward.
While King Paluta may not have secured a spot in these categories his growing influence in Ghana’s music industry remains undeniable. Fans are hopeful that future projects will earn him the recognition they believe he deserves.
