Ghanaian social media influencer and YouTuber Elorm Ababio popularly known as Ama Governor has added her voice to the ongoing controversy surrounding the petition for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

Ama Governor who previously faced challenges in her call to the Bar has drawn comparisons between her own legal battles and the Chief Justice’s current predicament.

In a social media post Ama Governor expressed concerns about due process in the handling of the petition against Chief Justice Torkornoo. She responded to a post criticizing the government for allegedly denying the Chief Justice the opportunity to know the charges against her and defend herself.

Sharing her perspective she wrote:
Matter of fact as someone who faced the EXACT SAME issues of abuse of power and human rights breaches three consecutive times in the last two years but fought and won over the system I’ll say deep breaths, it’ll be a long ride ma’am. I just can’t guarantee that like me, you will win.”

She further questioned the alleged violation of legal rights stating:
Would you look at that?! Imagine the rule of law being arbitrarily forsaken for injustice’s sake. Imagine a decision being taken against you without your right to a fair hearing. Imagine that those who know the law are the perpetrators. Yeah, this story sounds awfully familiar.

Her comments have sparked discussions on social media with some supporting her stance while others argue that the case of the Chief Justice is different from hers.

Meanwhile President John Dramani Mahama has expressed disappointment over the public circulation of a letter from Chief Justice Torkornoo requesting copies of the petition against her.

According to a letter from the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, dated March 28, 2025, President Mahama was unhappy that the Chief Justice’s letter went viral on social media before he had the opportunity to review it.

His Excellency, however notes with disappointment that your letter of 27th March 2025 addressed to him was circulating on social media even before he could review its contents. The letter was reportedly shared as an attachment to another letter you wrote to the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges, and the President of the Ghana Bar Association, the letter stated.

As a result the presidency has marked each page of the petition-related documents as restricted to prevent further leaks.

Despite his disappointment President Mahama has assured that due process will be followed in handling the petition. He has directed Chief Justice Torkornoo to submit her preliminary response within 10 days of receiving the letter to facilitate further consultation between the presidency and the Council of State.

Finally, His Excellency wishes to assure you that due process will be followed in handling this matter and that you will be given a full and fair opportunity to be heard,” the letter added.

The Chief Justice, in a letter dated March 27, 2025 formally requested access to the petitions against her to enable her to prepare a response.

She stated:
I am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me, and allow me at least seven days after receipt of the same to provide my response to you, which response can then form part of the material that you conduct the consultations anticipated under 146 (6), before the possible setting up of a Committee of Inquiry under Article 146 (7).”

This request aligns with Ghana’s constitutional provisions governing the removal of a Chief Justice.

The controversy surrounding Chief Justice Torkornoo’s removal petition has generated intense public debate. Some legal analysts and citizens have raised concerns about transparency and due process, while others believe the Chief Justice should be given a fair hearing before any decision is made.

Ama Governor’s remarks have further fueled discussions, especially among her supporters, who believe her past experience with the legal system gives her a unique perspective on the matter.

As the situation unfolds, Ghanaians are closely monitoring how the presidency, judiciary, and legal stakeholders handle this sensitive issue. The next steps taken will be crucial in determining the future of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and reinforcing public confidence in the legal system.
